Chapter 28 The Public Announcement
With a snap of her fingers, Verida silenced the room, her voice steady as she began. "Today, we welcome Liria into our midst. She has been appointed as Enara\'s bodyguard and shall be treated with respect."
The announcement hit like a thunderclap, silencing all remaining murmurs. Enara\'s jaw tightened, and her expression remained as stormy as ever, but Liria met the crowd\'s glares with a raised chin, her heart pounding as she faced the unfamiliar gazes head-on.
A voice broke the quiet, an older, sharp-featured demon noble stepping forward with a displeased frown. "With all due respect, Your Majesties, do we really need an outsider, a human girl, to serve as Princess Enara\'s bodyguard? Surely one of our own—"
"Enough." Nyssara\'s voice cut through the hall with a deadly softness, her violet eyes gleaming. "Liria has been chosen, and that choice is not open for debate."
The noble hesitated, his mouth opening as if to say more, but a single look from Verida kept him silent. There was no mistaking the finality in their gaze; this was not a matter up for discussion. Liria caught Enara\'s mothers exchanging a brief, knowing glance, and a chill of understanding ran through her this was no ordinary assignment. She wasn\'t merely a bodyguard; she was here because they wanted her here, for reasons far beyond her own understanding.
[Consider this your welcome party,] the System offered dryly.
"A little friendlier than I expected," Liria thought back sarcastically, adjusting her grip on her sword. Her grandmother\'s blade felt like a reassuring weight at her side, the cool leather hilt grounding her.
The gathering ended as quickly as it began, with the demon nobles bowing and filing out in silence, their expressions a mixture of suspicion and grudging acceptance. When the last demon had left, Verida gave Liria a slight nod.
"Come, Liria. There are quarters prepared for you," Verida said, turning to lead her down another darkened corridor. Enara, looking as thrilled as if she\'d been ordered to chew on nails, followed reluctantly.
They stopped outside a heavy, intricately carved door near the end of the hall. "This will be your room," Verida announced, pushing the door open with ease. "Conveniently located right next to Enara\'s."
Enara looked like she might burst a blood vessel, while Liria couldn\'t help the smirk that crept onto her face. "How thoughtful," Liria said, her voice dripping with false sweetness. "I\'m honored by the… proximity."
Enara shot her a withering glare before storming off down the hall, muttering something under her breath about "personal space" and "eternal torment." With a bemused shake of her head, Liria stepped into her new quarters.
The room was surprisingly large, dimly lit by an array of deep purple lanterns . Rich tapestries lined the walls, each woven with scenes of battles and victories of demons long past. A bed draped in silken, dark fabric dominated one side of the room, with a desk and shelves set up along the far wall. Liria let her hand run over the polished surface of a small side table, feeling the smooth, cool stone beneath her fingers.
Across the room, a small alcove housed a weapon rack, where she carefully placed her new blade. The silver engravings gleamed softly in the low light, lending an elegant but lethal edge to the room\'s otherwise somber atmosphere. A wardrobe of dark wood stood open, filled with cloaks and tunics that appeared custom-made for her. It was all so foreign, yet she couldn\'t deny a faint thrill at having a space of her own in a place as awe-inspiring as this.
[Not a bad setup for a \'human outsider,\' wouldn\'t you say?]
"Not bad at all," she thought back, feeling the weight of the unfamiliar yet thrilling responsibility she\'d been handed. "Think I\'ll have to defend my \'outsider\' status more than once?"
[Highly probable,] the System replied with its usual calm. [But adapting quickly is among your strengths.]
As Liria inspected the room, a knock sounded at the door. She turned to find her grandmother, Daena, standing in the doorway, her eyes warm but with a hint of worry.
"Well, Liria, what do you think?" Daena asked, her voice gentle as she stepped inside.
"It\'s… different," Liria replied, glancing around. "But it\'s also kind of incredible."
Daena\'s gaze softened, and she nodded in understanding. "Good. I\'m glad you\'re not too overwhelmed. This place can feel… intense, especially at first. Are you comfortable here? No hesitation or fear, I hope?"n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om
Liria chuckled, a touch of defiance sparking in her eyes. "I\'ve dealt with worse than a few curious glances and an angry demon princess."
Daena smiled, pride shining in her eyes. "That\'s the spirit. But remember, this world is far more complex than the one you\'re used to. If you ever need help or feel you\'re in over your head… don\'t hesitate to come to me."
"I won\'t," Liria replied, meaning it. There was something reassuring in Daena\'s presence, like a steady anchor she could always rely on.
After a moment of comfortable silence, Daena\'s expression grew serious. "Remember, Liria, your role here is vital. Not just as Enara\'s protector but as a bridge between worlds. You\'re stronger than you know, and your presence here may mean more than either of us understands yet."
Liria felt a flicker of nervousness, though she hid it behind a confident grin. "I\'ll make sure not to disappoint."
Daena nodded approvingly, then her gaze turned thoughtful. "And about Enara… she may not warm up to you immediately. But she will come around, in time. Until then, you\'ll just have to endure her, as I know you can."
"Oh, I\'m well aware. And believe me, I\'ve got plenty of endurance," Liria replied with a grin. But as Daena left her room, closing the door behind her, Liria\'s grin faded slightly. Despite her bravado, there was a weight to this new role that made her stomach twist.
[Feeling the weight of the \'honor\'?] the System asked, sensing her unease.
"More like the weight of being a glorified babysitter for a royal brat," she shot back, though her tone held more humor than irritation.
[Oh, come now. You know it\'s more than that,] the System reminded her, [and a significant opportunity for your growth.]
